May 17, 2016 Board Meeting Agenda Item #23 Title APPROVAL OF THE LIGHTHOUSE ACADEMY GRANT PROPOSAL TO THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH FLORIDA SARASOTA-MANATEE'S GRANT TO THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF JUSTICE FOR SARASOTA HIGH SCHOOL AND ONE ADDITIONAL HIGH SCHOOL Description COMPETITIVE: Sub-grant of $3,350,000 will implement and study the effectiveness of The Lighthouse Academy as a special learning center for at-risk students and those who have committed offenses which might otherwise result in out-of-school suspension or assignment to an alternative school. University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee professor, Jessica Grosholz, PhD, will submit the proposal to the National Institute of Justice's Comprehensive School Safety Initiative program and will lead the project. Initial project will focus on Sarasota High School and will expand to one additional school after two years. Recommendation That The Lighthouse Academy grant proposal be approved.
